Cierra Funke is our featured superstar in this post! Read on to learn about her beginnings with Winchester Dental, what she’s currently working on, and what she likes to do in her free time.
How did you come to work at Winchester Dental?
I started as an intern at Winchester Dental because I wanted to eventually become a dental hygienist, but I needed experience. So I worked a few hours each week, assisting the hygienists. Then in the spring, I started to do more dental assisting—and now I’m in hygiene school!
What made you want to become a hygienist?
I wanted a healthcare profession. I like helping people and have always enjoyed learning about teeth and educating others.
Tell us about the hygiene program in which you’re currently studying.
I’m in the program at Lord Fairfax Community College. It lasts five semesters total, and I’ll finish in May 2022.
What’s been your favorite part of the hygiene program so far?
I like the clinics and hands-on practice!
Winchester Dental is like a family. Tell us about the partnerships you’ve formed in the office. Who inspires you?
I’ve learned a lot since I’ve been here. The entire staff has been awesome and has given me a lot of knowledge to carry on to school. While I focus on school, I’m currently working here once a week, but I am staying in touch with the hygienists. Everyone has been very supportive, really, not just one person.
Is there a great piece of advice you’ve gotten that always motivates you?
For school, I remind myself that all the hard work and studying are temporary, and it’ll be worth it in the end.
When you’re not working or studying, how do you like to spend your free time?
I enjoy the gym, lifting weights, and hiking. I also have a horse and like to ride. I’ve been riding since age 7, and my mother and I like to ride together when we can. I ride Western, English, and sometimes bareback!
Any advice you could give to a future dental hygienist?
You have to be passionate about it. If you’re not, it’s hard. Be passionate about helping other people!
Do you have a personal philosophy of dental hygiene and oral health?
The benefits of good dental hygiene are very important for overall health and well-being.
